The art of communicating your research orally at a conference: launch of three fact sheets to help you prepare.

Conference season is approaching! As you know, preparing an effective presentation goes beyond assembling a set of slides. To help you communicate better with your audience, to capture and hold their attentionand promote understanding and memorization of your presentationPhDesign has prepared a series of 3 summary sheets.

These summary sheets are intended primarily for young researchers learning about scientific presentations, and more broadly, for all members of the research community curious to learn more about the subject!

They are based on our expertise in psychology, scientific communication and graphic design. They are also based on scientific literature, and more particularly on Stephen Kosslyn’s work on 8 psychological principles to take into account in our communication actions, and Michael Alley’s work on optimizing the structure of PowerPoint presentations. All this to be discovered throughout the sheets!

These summary sheets cover 3 key aspects of preparing a communication and are downloadable in pdf format under a free license. Topics covered:

  • The target audience: how do we go about obtaining information about the target audience? What are the general principles of communication according to the type of target audience?
  • Communication objectives and key messages: how to define your communication objectives? What is your key message? How todetermine the coherence between your key message and your presentation context?
  • Communication content: what is the optimal structure for a conference presentation? What are the best practices for structure? How to finish a presentation?

Our special thanks go to the customers of our first year of business. It is thanks to their trust that we have been able to free up staff time to carry out this first agency project. Yes, we’re a company, but we’re committed to realizing open-access projects to support the research community.
